Miao silver ornaments stand as one of the most brilliant symbols of Miao culture, known as “the wordless history book worn on the body”. In 2006, the Miao silver ornament forging craft was officially inscribed on the first National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Far more than exquisite decorations, they carry the Miao people’s thousand-year migration history, totem beliefs and family sentiments. Core Crafts & Aesthetic Features Handicraft Tempered by Thousands of Blows A complete set of Miao silver ornaments generally goes through over 30 procedures, including smelting, hammering, wire drawing, weaving, engraving and cleaning. Silversmiths can draw silver ingots into threads as thin as human hair (filigree craft). Three-dimensional patterns are formed by chasing. Every piece is purely handcrafted, free from mass machine production. Distinct Aesthetic Standards Miao silverware follows the aesthetic principle: the bigger, the better; the heavier, the better; the more, the better. For instance, the large silver horn ornament popular in Qiandongnan can reach 85 centimeters in width. During grand festivals, a full costume of silver decorations may weigh up to 10 to 15 kilograms. As wearers walk, silver bells jingle, shimmering brightly with stunning visual impact.
